Cape Girardeau Public Schools (CGPS) is proud to announce the promotion of Drew Church to head principal at Cape Central High School (CHS). Church, a dedicated educator and leader, has been an integral part of the CHS community for nearly two decades, bringing a wealth of experience and passion for student success.
Church joined CGPS in 2006 as a Physical Education teacher and Head Men’s Basketball Coach. He transitioned into administration in 2018, serving as Assistant Principal while continuing to coach until the spring of 2024. His commitment to fostering a positive school culture and strong academic environment has earned him the respect of students, staff, and families.
A Charleston, Illinois native, Church has dedicated his entire career to education. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from the University of Evansville (Indiana) in 2001 and later obtained his Master of Arts in Secondary Administration and Supervision from Southeast Missouri State University. Now in his 21st year in education, Church is eager to take on this new leadership role and continue building on the school's tradition of excellence.
“I am truly honored to serve as the next principal of Cape Central High School,” said Church. “Ms. (Nancy) Scheller has been a great mentor and friend to me. This school has been my home for nearly 20 years and I look forward to continuing my work alongside our incredible staff, students, and families to create an environment where every student can succeed.”
Superintendent Dr. Howard Benyon expressed confidence in Church’s leadership, saying, “Mr. Church has demonstrated an unwavering dedication to CHSl. His deep-rooted connection to the school, leadership experience, and passion for student achievement make him the ideal choice to lead Cape Central into the future.”
Church will officially assume his new role as Head Principal beginning July 1, 2025. He takes over for Nancy Scheller, who is retiring at the end of the year after seven years as principal at Cape Central and a total of 19 years working at CGPS.
“We are grateful to Ms. Scheller for all of her dedication to our school district,” said Benyon. “We will miss her tremendously but are very happy for her as she looks forward to her new chapter ahead.”
